It is great to see that Bernie Dolan is now blogging - welcome to the Blogosphere Bernie! For anyone who doesn't know, he runs a team of developers in Boston for Sun Life. Only met him once at a Boston CFUG, but am looking forward to meeting up with him at the various conferences down the line. Oh, and he’s using MachBlog, so nice to see all Matt and Petes hard work is being utilized. I love BlogCFC, but what would the world be without a little friendly compettion?!

Just wanted to say that I had a great time meeting up with everyone at the “CFUG” on Monday. Very cool to meet everyone and looking forward to seeing you all at various conferences. I’m sure I’ll also be back down in London a few times this year so I’ll try to hang out a little longer next time! Thanks Mark, Kevin, Big Kev, Nik,and "the Finn" :-> It was also great to meet Andy Allan – even if I had to travel from Edinburgh to London to meet someone who lives just outside of Glasgow. US readers: replace cities with New York, Philly and Minneapolis respectively to get the idea. Which interestingly enough would describe exactly how I ended up meeting Chris Scott at cf.objective() :->

Mark Dalgarno and the Code Generation Network

I met up with Mark Dalgarno this morning. He is editor of the Code Generation Network, organizer of the Code Generation Conference in Cambridge (England) in May of this year, and principle of Software Acumen - a company that helps businesses to implement Software Product Lines. It was interesting to learn more about his approaches to and experiences with Software Product Lines. If you are interested in Code Generation, you should definitely check out the CGN, if you'll be in the UK in May and get a chance, the Conference looks very exciting, and if you happen to work for a company looking to implement a software product line and want some advice, Mark's company might provide a great starting point! Can’t wait to attend the conference in May! And keep an eye on this stuff. I'd predict that in many ways, application generation (encompassing code generation, software product lines, domain specific languages, language workbenches and language oriented programming) will be as influential over the next ten years as Object Oriented programming has been over the last ten. Maybe instead of learning another programming language this year you might want to check out another programming paradigm instead!

An Evening with Mark Drew

As I was down in London, I met up on Friday with Mark Drew. Lots of interesting conversation as well as a couple of drinks and some rather good North African cuisine. Without giving anything away, I am excited to see how CF Eclipse will continue to develop down the line - lots of very exciting ideas. As a side note, I think we need to institute a rule that any comparisons between CF Eclipse and other IDE's should be limited to IDE's for dynamically typed languages. A lot of the code completion tools you take for granted in Java are just not possible in ColdFusion, Ruby or Python! Oh, and for future reference, while Mark says he is partial to a Jack Daniels and coke, I can exclusively reveal his drink of choice is Babycham, (see the notes) so please remember that when you’re buying him a drink next time!
