CF on Mac, MSSQL on Parallels - More Gotchas

So, I finally got round to getting CF running on OSX, but still needed to work with MSSQL 2005 under parallels. Mark Drew posted some great ideas but there are a couple of things he didn't come across.

Here are full instructions for all the problems I came across and what I had to do to get it working. Please let me know if anyone has any other problems I missed!

Peter,

What was your CF-web server config? Are you using the built-in Apache, or did you manage to get 2.x up and running? Frankly, I'm about to give up on the whole thing - I've been compiling connectors, editing conf files, creating missing JRun stuff, and still got nothing but errors....it's been pretty frustrating.

Edward,

Getting CF up and running on OSX is now VERY easy. Just do a clean install of MX7 and make sure to install it using the mult-server method.

Then go to http://www.web-relevant.com/blogs/cfobjective/inde...

and download the .app bundles to start/stop the server. Just place the .app bundles anywhere on your hard disk then clikc the StartCFMX app. After beating my head against the desk for days I finally found that post and was up and running in just minutes!

BTW, I forgot to mention that I installed mine using the built-in webserver but this should work just fine with Apache as well.

Thanks, Russ - this was just one of the references I was using, along with the great help over at WebMages blog and others...sadly, my experience has been less successful. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I have a macbook and not the pro version. I may give it another go from scratch, but I do know my way around a bit and so far, no go....

Hi Ed, I stayed with Apache 1.3 and was one of the lucky ones for whom the instructions actually worked!

Hi.. I'm doing things slightly differently.. and unclear on how to browse directly to parallels. I'm running cfmx 7.02 and apache 2.0.58 on parallels.. app is up and running and I can browse to it from within parallels. But now, I'm trying to hit it via mac side. I'm on a network at work.. running tiger 10.4.x on a macbook pro.

I've tried using my assigned network ip..
I've tried using the ip I see in parallels when I run ipconfig.. which is a 10. address.
I've tried using the ips listed under network summary for parallels host-guest, and parallels NAT..

How do I browse to parallels from mac ?

Thx guys.

Hi, i got to this thread looking for a solution on how to connect to a virtualized Windows XP using Parallels (will call it "PWIN" for short), so i can connect to a SQL Server instance installed on it, from other hosts on the network. I'v tried modifying the PWIN workgroup, but still, i can't PING it from the other hosts... i think it's got something to do with IP configuration on the PWIN, but haven't tried to mess with its TCP/IP configuration since i don't know if Parallels needs the configuration to be as it is now. So, i would like to know if someone has ever made this work, may be it's quite easy and i just can't realize it, or may be it just can't be done, who knows?, so... thx in advance for your help.

Thank you for this post! I was stuck in this exact predicament (CF on OS X, Parallels, and SQL Server 2005), and the IPAll trick and mixed authentication mode was exactly what I needed to get this working. Perfect.
