WriteRoom Rocks

I've been using WriteRoom for about a week now and I'm really loving it as a focused UI when you just need to take notes or write up some thoughts on your Mac . . .

I have Pages which is working nicely as a Word replacement, and I have TextMate which is my default text editor as it's simple, unobtrusive and I have an entire book of cool things it does that I haven't had a chance to play with yet. But sometimes I just want to take notes or write up a blog post. For that it's really hard to beat WriteRoom.

A $30 shareware project (you can get a 30 day free trial download), it just provides you with a completely uncluttered green text on black background full screen interface for writing words. It isn't for word processing per se - to my knowledge it doesn't support much in the way of formatting. It just allows you to focus on writing text and by hiding all of the distractions, I've certainly found that it allows me to just focus on writing without distraction (although growl notifications still pop up if you want them).

If you doubt the power of this very simple concept, check my number of postings in the last week compared to a few weeks back :->

There's also a certain perverse please in turning a top of the line 17"MBP into something that looks like it's in VT320 terminal emulation mode from the '80's . . .

Anyone else played with WriteRoom? If not, you should really give it a shot if you'd like a distraction free UI for writing/blogging.

Is there anything remotely like this for Windows that you are aware of? I am already in love with the concept, almost to the point where I would go buy a mac. Or not. ;)

Did I see this in the latest MacHeist?

@Alan, not that I know of. But if it makes you buy a Mac, it's a good thing :->

@Sam, Oh yeah - looks like. http://www.macheist.com/ Dang. I got the last one. Will have to see if this one makes sense now I've shelled out for WR directly . . .

Kind of a pointless comment but... I loved the full screen in writeroom so much when I went to get something a bit more powerful (for books, help docs, and papers) I went with Scrivener ( http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.html ). Which is a killer writing application - however you can't get that cool terminal feel like you can with writeroom.

@Rob, Actually a very cool comment - thanks for the heads up. Will have to give scrivener a try . . .

@ROb, OMG. Looking very cool indeed . . . just what I need for a couple of short book concepts I've been working on . . .

Thanks for the tip. Great software reminds me WordPerfect back in the days.
Here is an alternative for PC http://they.misled.us/dark-room

I got Dark-room for Windows...a couple minor .net errors, but that is admittedly, to be expected. ;)
