Pricing, Production Costs and the Implications of Application Generation

For classes of web apps it really is possible to substantiallycut the cost of developing them by 3x-8x. I've known/been doing that for years and there are plenty of case studies in the software product line field for these kind of savings for many kinds of software applications. What is more interesting is trying to figure out the implications (if any) to the market for developing mid-market web applications. In a series of postings I'm going to examine some of the drivers and come up with some thoughts about how it might affect the market. Don't worry, I'll be back to technical postings later in the week :-)

Input appreciated!

Peter, you are right about the implications of bringing true web application generators to market. I work for a company called AppVenture and we have created an extremely powerful application generator. We discuss the impact of these tools on the market, and how to market/sell these types of tools on almost a daily basis. For the most part, people just don't believe us until we show them a demo. We can generate up to 90% of your application in 10% of the time, so you can imagine the implications. Why is is accepted that roughly 80% of custom software projects fail, or go over budget? Feel free to shoot me an email somtime, we are always looking to swap ideas. nick@appventure.com

Hi Nick,

For sure. Sounds like we're both doing similar things - I'll drop you a line.
