What is Application Generation?

Application generation is snippets on steroids. It is a way you can think more and type less. It is the future of programming, and the future is looking good!

Whether you are building and maintaining a single application or creating a hundred a year, application generation is a way you can focus on new challenges and improving your programming skills. It allows you to reducing the repetition and to search for similarities in your code to make it more elegant, functional and maintainable. Application generation makes programming fun again.

Over the following weeks and months I will be posting a lot more about what application generation is, how it works, and why you should care. I run a company called SystemsForge that has been in the business of generating custom web applications since 2004. We don’t sell anything to programmers, so this isn’t a sales pitch. It’s just a space where we can all discuss, debate and learn about the next big thing in programming. I have a few ideas, but I’d sure like to learn from everyone else. I’ll also be releasing a number of small open source projects over the next few months like CF Template to make it easier for everyone to generate more of their applications.

This isn’t a place where you’ll find all the answers or where geniuses will pontificate on how mere mortals should work. It is a place where everyone who has tried application generation can share their thoughts so hopefully we can all learn from each other and spend less time on figuring out the plumbing and more time on changing the game.
